What is a 3-year GIC?

You lend a bank or credit union your money for 3 years. When the term ends, you get it back with interest. The amount you put in is guaranteed, and the rate is usually fixed for the whole term1.

These are rates for non-redeemable GICs: your money stays in until the term ends. If you might need it sooner, compare redeemable GIC rates too. New to GICs? Start with Rates Explained: GICs.

Before you buy

  • Many lenders ask for a minimum deposit, often $500 or $1,000.
  • Some special-offer rates are for new deposits only.
  • Eligible GICs at CDIC member banks are insured up to $100,000 per category2. Credit unions are covered by their province.
  • Interest in a regular account is taxed every year, even if it's paid at the end3. In a TFSA it's generally tax-free.
